So what?

New gentleman commenter Ambrosiac left me this comment yesterday:
Congratulations, Lopi. Let me take the opportunity to ask a fashion if offtopic question: what is your opinion about these shoes:
Disregarding Biblical injunctions re cloven hooves :P, am I alone in feeling uneasy about asking a woman out if she insists on donning this sort of thing?!
Ambrosiac, thank you for your comment. I wouldn't touch this subject otherwise, but you asked for my opinion, so here it is:

I totally agree with you. I find these shoes plain ugly. People may argue that they may be extremely comfortable or that they are innovative and original, but I don't think that takes anything away from their ugliness. However, it still is a matter of taste and taste is subjective. Our aesthetics depend on so many different factors. What we our mother used to wear when we were young, what culture we grew up in, what our religion or morals are. All of these and many other factors play part in what we end up considering attractive and what not. So, me considering them ugly doesn't really mean anything. And I should point out too, that due to my manners and common niceness, I would never tell that to the person wearing them. Even writing that here, it makes me feel bad about Sara Jessica. Because, let's face it, she's not doing any harm to anyone. It's totally her business if she chooses to wear ugly shoes or not.

Now, regarding to you saying that you wouldn't ask a woman out if she was wearing them, my question is this: Would actually these shoes keep you from getting to know better an otherwise wonderful person? Does an awful footwear choice mean that that person is awful too? Or you'd just be embarrassed to walk down the street with her? Ambrosiac, and all of you amazing readers, I'd love to know what you think.

come to think about it, these shoes are nothing more than a winter version of dear flip-flops. open your mind, u date a girl for a million reasons but shoes should not be one of them*.

*saying this, once i was totally put off by a guy's white socks. silly i know but as it turned out i was not totally wrong, silly choice of socks was only a reflection of his silliness overall:S

does this help at all? :)

Interesting. While I agree that our personal opinions about others' choices don't matter much in the grand scheme, I think that there is some value in making judgment calls based on others' wardrobe choices. If someone is wearing a dirty, smelly, torn-up shirt and shoes that are falling apart, you could make an educated guess that they're not doing too well mentally/emotionally. If someone is wearing pristine designer duds head-to-toe, you could make an educated guess that they have different ideas surrounding money than you. If someone is wearing super bizarre and massively expensive cloven-toed boots, you could make an educated guess that they like attention.

And that's as far as you can get without TALKING to these folks and gathering more information. But our fashion choices broadcast information about ourselves, and information can be gathered just by observing what people are wearing. Albeit scant, cursory, and very preliminary information.

These are totally not my style, but the air is purer at the high levels of fashion that Sarah Jessica is known to float at. I guess crazy shoes would make we want to talk to someone more, to see if there was some extra crazy going on inside their heads. And they may turn out to be very interesting and lovely. And crazy.

sal's comment is great. I agree.
what we wear is a statement and a above all a choice.

The shoes are grotesque but living in Seattle, ugly shoes are pretty standard. They don't keep me from talking to people, that's for sure.

oh I think they are hideous! but that's my opinion. but regarding the last thing you've mentioned, totaly agree on that!

about the yellowness! oh most of times I hate it, but ragarding the rooms before it (brownish yucky wood) muuuuuch better :)
I don't really match it with great colours, my duvet is blue and yellow (stars and suns stupid I know but it's warm!) but I cover it with my pucca comforter. had before a fucsia comforter but got tired of it too. do you have any suggestions? really welcome them! I'll do a post soon as I have the time to make the room shine from being clean hehe!

The shoes are in my opinion ugly... Isn't it really inrteresting how differently people see things, especially style-wise?

I don't like the boots either.

A friend of mine has a green pair of high heels that have the same toe design. Whenever I see her shoes out of her feet they look ugly. Otherwise she makes them look good(beautiful). Bizarre but good! Though I m sure many wouldn't agree with me...
Especially guys...

I am not a fan of those boots either! I have seen glitzy flats with split toes like that though...

Heh heh... I do find myself in Seattle from time to time (sleepless, yes... after a straight drive from LA) and I have seen extremes in footware. Not just Hill chic but also Ballard casual, Pioneer Square gruffy, U District comfy... Not least, when I drive out to the Indians to get cigars at a non-usurious price whatever I wear ends up doubly caked in mud. Judge me not harshly pliiz.

@Sal
Indeed... Have you also noticed how you take a look at someone's car or apartment and form a pretty good idea as to their way of dressing?

@lopi

I do like SJP (Indeed, I find women in her style a lot more attractive than the doll/centerfold type), so I was disappointed to see her indulge in that unhappy experiment.

Months ago her likeness graced a multistory building at Hollywood and Vine, and she was classically well dressed -- and very sexy.

I wouldn't really let clothes stand in the way of more gripping things. For women I know, when they come to see me or invite me over, I couldn't care less about what they are wearing... or, for that matter, not wearing. :D

Heaven forbid, I love the click of high heels on my garden's cobblestones, I love my night visitors, and I should hate it were I to dissuade one of them for her being out of fashion! Hey, I know which side my bread is buttered on.

I only meant that for a night out, especially with somebody new, I would expect her to be... well, as graceful and discriminating as you are, Lopi!

those shoes are horrific and terrible, I am sad to say. I am usually such a fan of everything Sarah Jessica wears!
